Vaughan Pomeroy: why belong?
Vaughan Pomeroy has been a TFN member for over five years, and is a close second in the tight race for member who brings more guests to events. This month, he writes about why he regularly invites friends to join him in giving.
If you are like me you find it very easy to join various societies and charities. We all like to feel that we belong, but in many cases we join organisations only if belonging brings benefits, the relationship is largely transactional. We may get free entry or a regular supply of interesting reading matter.
TFN is a wonderful organisation which brings people together to raise money for amazing small organisations that achieve great things, but why would I want to join, to become a member? I joined because I thought that I would like to be able to propose organisations that I knew, and I have so done. But that didn't turn out to be the thing that keeps me coming back, there is a steady flow of great organisations to fill the programmes.
Despite my initial reason for becoming a member, the biggest benefit to me has been the sheer joy shared with friends who I can bring along as my guests to the Connectors. I have watched people that I know very well change as a result of just being there, just seeing for themselves how a disparate group of people can come together and make things happen, making our world a better place. Afterwards we can all go homewards feeling that we have been part of something extraordinary, happy to relax knowing that there is a lot of good in our world.
That is the greatest benefit of membership to me. I do encourage you to do the same, we can create even more change by showing a different way to get involved with small organisations, sharing the burden and the excitement. Together we can...we should share that message of hope.
