Meet TFN’s new members
The Funding Network (TFN) is a membership-led organisation, and we are proud to have built a diverse community of people who have an interest in innovative, young charities and a passion for social change. Our members play a vital role in the work that we do, from nominating and selecting projects to providing funding that transforms young charities. We spoke to some of our newest members about why they joined TFN and what it’s like to be a member.
Chris, who is the Director of a Foundation, joined because he was interested in our model of philanthropy and had heard great things about us from Edcuaid Sierra Leone, a project previously funded by our members. He is also looking forward to introducing some innovative charities and social enterprises to other members by nominating them to pitch. Chris attended his first TFN event in January and said ‘I loved it! The organisations were really well chosen and the pitches honest and heartfelt. There was a real energy in the room and I was surprised by how diverse the members were. It was a hugely positive experience’.
Paul joined TFN after he came to our January 2016 event to learn about TFN and our model of live crowdfunding. He made the decision to become a member because he wants the opportunity to ‘see more dynamic crowdfunding in action, spend time with dedicated members and supporters and have some fun evenings!’. Paul says he didn’t know what to expect from his first TFN event but found that ‘the stories of the charities were touching and heartfelt and it really felt that those in the room were able to do some good and help others’.
Michael, CEO of a water charity previously funded by TFN members, became a member of TFN after coming to our event at St. Paul’s in summer 2015 and our January event this year. Michael said that he moved into the charity sector as he turned 50 (instead of buying a sports car), because he wants to end his career doing something socially worthwhile. His decision to join TFN as he approaches retirement is a reflection of his desire to continue along this path. Of coming to TFN events and meeting other members, Michael says ‘it was not just their philanthropic instincts that excited me, it was also their desire to maximise the impact of their donations, to use their own commercial and practical experiences to focus their investments on organisations with the greatest ambition, the most creative approach and the power to radically change lives’.
Alexandre supports charities through his family Foundation through global philanthropy. He joined TFN after attending our January 2016 event because he wants to find out about new charities he can support, as well as nominating charities he already has links with. Alexandre says he was impressed at our funding event, which he believes to be an effective channel for fundraising for smaller charities. ‘I was most impressed with the effectiveness of the format, the passion of the presenters, the positive overall energy of TFN members and the clear successful formula where each charity that presented succeeded in over-achieving in raising the amounts requested’, said Alexandre after attending his first TFN live crowdfunding event.
If you would like to join Chris, Paul, Michael and Alexandre as TFN newcomers, you can become a member too. Or, if you would like to come to an event to see what you think of our live crowdfunding evenings, we have a number of exciting events happening soon – come along and be as impressed as our wonderful new members were!
