Fighting Inequality Together at Camden Giving
Natasha Friend, Director of Camden Giving, shares her insights on their first live crowdfunding event in partnership with TFN -
Camden Giving is a new charity set-up to empower the people living and working in Camden to do something about growing inequality in the borough. Camden is an exciting, creative and wealthy place, but despite this, a third of children in Camden live in poverty.
We partnered with The Funding Network to give Camden’s workforce an opportunity to learn more about challenges facing local people and an opportunity to contribute to small local charities making a big difference.
What we weren’t expecting was that this became a showcase for the brilliant people who lead these small charities. At Camden Giving we have the pleasure of working closely with our grantees and it always puts a spring in our step, their dedication and enthusiasm is infectious and hugely motivational. The Funding Network event gave us an opportunity to hear their deeply personal and moving stories and marvel at the impact they are having on their beneficiaries.
Another thing we hadn’t expected was the amount of collaboration that would take place on the night. This is the joy of working at a local level, we’re all neighbours. Some of the charities who pitched have agreed to start referring beneficiaries to each other and many of the audience have signed up to volunteer or share space with the charities.
The night left us feeling hopeful and inspired by the work being done by brilliant people to fight inequality in Camden, and we see a brighter future for the borough and its residents.
