Book Clubs in Schools launches National Teen Book Club
TFN alumni charity Book Clubs in Schools (BCiS) is teaming up with publisher, HarperCollins and Speakers for Schools to launch the National Teen Book Club. After a successful pilot with over 150 schools in March 2021, the full programme will soon be launching in June.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, children from disadvantaged backgrounds have been disproportionately affected by school and library closures, and many keen readers have lost the opportunity to access the stories they love. From the very first lockdown BCiS has worked hard to ensure that young people can continue to enjoy books and gain the benefits of reading no matter what. Beth Ginsburg and Ali Palmer, Directors of BCiS, have seized the opportunity presented by the pandemic to spread their work more widely, taking advantage of both digital and in-person platforms.
In November 2020, TFN's Strategic Funding Group members raised £17,000 at a special crowdfunding event to support BCiS in this expansion. As BCiS roll out the National Teen Book Club, this next step will elevate their work to a national audience and enable them to bring the joy of reading to even more children across the UK.
Ali and Beth said of the National Teen Book Club initiative: “With regular school closed, we have sorely missed the opportunity to spark children’s imagination through reading and discussing books. We are excited to partner with Speakers for Schools to extend our clubs virtually and to introduce exciting writers and creative leaders through the National Teen Book Club events.”
