TFN LEEDS
Now in its third year, TFN Leeds is going from strength to strength. In 2006 we raised £26,000, rising to £29,000 in 2007. At the most recent event, on 30th April 2008, we raised over £30,000. This total sum of £85,000 has been used to support the work of twelve locally-based projects working in Yorkshire and three overseas projects in Thailand, India and Africa.
We work closely in partnership with the Leeds Community Foundation and are busy planning our next event. Further details will be available soon. We would particularly like to thank the Yorkshire Bank for hosting the most recent event in their newly-opened staff restaurant, the Icon Suite. For further information please contact Sally-Anne Greenfield, at the Leeds Community Foundation sally-anne@leedscommunityfoundation.org.uk or Brian Peace, a TFN member brpeace@ntlworld.com
The following inspiring projects presented on the evening:
- Leeds Simon Community: this small charity works with “street homeless” people in Leeds, who are suffering from quite severe and complex issues. They provide food, blankets and specialist one-to-one support, to help them get back on their feet. The £6,800 they received will help them offer a Soup Kitchen in the city, one night a week, as part of their outreach work.
- Sunseed Tanzania Trust: the project will work in the Dodomo Region in Tanzania, helping villagers make up to 1,000 new mud stoves. The benefits include: using less firewood, reducing pressure on vegetation, lowering CO2 emissions, improving family health, providing jobs and income. The £5,800 they received will enable them to work in three villages for a whole year.
- S.T.O.P run a Domestic Violence Perpetrator Programme, working with men and women who want to change their violent or abusive behaviour. They work with up to 250 clients a year and help them re-build constructive relationships and prevent relapses. Their £5,560 will be used to help run the Support Groups that provide a lifeline for both men and women.
- No to Knives: a national campaign launched by the Royal Armouries to encourage young people not to carry knives. Funding will help recruit and support two young people to work as peer mentors in Leeds, working with young people aged11-16 in schools and youth organisations. Their £5,400 will help them spread the message throughout the city that carrying knives is not cool.
- Homeworkers Worldwide: this Leeds-based charity helps to improve the working conditions of home-workers throughout the world. These are individuals (mainly women) who work, at home, for a cash income. They rarely have any rights such as minimum wage, social security, or a pension. Their £5,060 will enable them to continue with the important campaigning work.
