On September 20th 2008 Funding Day we gave 9 projects
from across the globe and across a range of issues
a platform to pitch to us. We raised an amazing £75,186.99 on the day for the following 9 projects.
- Volunteers for Social Justice: Aims to tackle the root causes of slavery in north India. This project, Picture Freedom, is a travelling photographic exhibition, film and performance troupe. VSJ received a total grant of £7,094.40. www.vsj-ddva.org
- The Glacier Trust: Aims to promote health, socio-economic benefit, forest conservation and slope stability in Himalayan communities by the introduction of biomass briquette fuel and the use of cooking stoves. The Glacier Trust received a grant of £7,685.50. www.theglaciertrust.org
- SPEAR: Aims to address the most common causes of underachievement in 16-24 year old unemployed young people, both practical and emotional through a highly interactive, six week programme. SPEAR received a grant of £12,329.10 www.spearcourse.org
- The Gaia Foundation: Aims to fill a significant gap in legal and information support to a growing network of actors pioneering an alternative human relationship to the Earth through the establishment of a dedicated centre. This project, The Earth Jurisprudence Research Centre, raised £5,390.30. www.gaiafoundation.org
- Bottletop: Aims to empower young people to make informed choices about sexual and reproductive health in order to prevent the spread of HIV, other STIs and to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies. This project received £6,868.50. www.bottletop.org
- PEAS - Promoting Equality in African Schools: Aims to create income generating ‘enterprise and commerce skills centres’ (based initially around bee keeping facilities) within new and existing PEAS schools in Uganda. This project raised £10,465.20. www.peas.org.uk
- Psychosis: Is a 20 minute documentary to be distributed Kensington & Chelsea Mind as part of their work in raising public and community awareness of the experience of psychosis and its impact on people’s lives. This project raised £6,399,20. www.kcmind.org.uk
- The Inga Foundation: Aims to pioneering alley-cropping with trees of the genus Inga as a sustainable, socially empowering alternative to detrimental slash-and-burn (s&b) agriculture in the rainforests of Central and South America. This project raised £12,099.39.
- Excellent Development: Aims to work with Kyumbuni Mbuani self-help group in Kenya to construct a small-scale sand dam, a school water tank and a community demonstration plot.
