December 1st 2005
The Funding Evening was kindly hosted by Goldman Sachs at their Fleet St Offices.
We raised a total of £36,007 for the following projects.
- Re~Cycle - to take unwanted bikes abandoned in the UK,
ship them to Africa & teach the local people skills to fix & maintain
them. Bicycles are a powerful tool for poverty alleviation, through
increased efficiency & empowerment. The grant helped to establish
the Re~Cycle London Hub and collect and ship 175 much needed bikes
to Africa. www.re-cycle.org
- International Alert - to contribute to conflict prevention
activities by fostering the participation of the people of Ceue
District in Sao Tome and Principe (STP) in local and national
debates on the responsible management of the country's future
oil resources through the provision of a community owned and managed
radio station. Funds raised covered the launch of the first station
in the District of Ceue, located in the south of the island.
- Microfinance for Youth - to provide hope and opportunity
to rural South Africa destitute youth by integrating economic
literacy, microfinance and employment experiences into the public
high school system. The amount raised enabled Microfinance for
Youth to refurbish empty classrooms into a commerce center at
our high schools, including an organic vegetable garden. www.gdcu.org
- SmartJustice - to carry out the first authoritative survey
into victims' views about crime and sentencing with the intention
of influencing government and sentencing policy. TFN's grant went
towards funding for their partnership with Victim Support to conduct
a large scale survey on victims' views about crime and punishment.
-
"Women Together" in Egypt - aims to enable
illiterate women in Egypt to overturn their barriers themselves
through peer learning training, and participation in community-led
programmes. Funds raised gave the crucial foothold to get the
first learning training for the women in Egypt off the ground,
and to co-ordinate all the stakeholders.
- Cecily's Fund - to give Zambian children who have been
orphaned or left vulnerable by AIDS, the chance to go to school,
and in so doing to prepare them for a self-sufficient, healthy
future and equip them to be leaders of social change in their
communities. TFN's grant enabled one hundred and seventy five
Zambian orphans in the Zambian town of Kitwe to go to school in
the final years of secondary level. www.cecilysfund.org
