APRIL 19th 2008
The Funding Evening on April 19th 2008 was sponsored by CAF- Charities Aid Foundation
and held at the Royal Overseas League in Green Park. On the day we raised a
total £61,474.74 for the following nine projects that presented.
- Rock Hard Circus: The pilot project of The Hangar Arts Trust, which is a co-operative providing affordable practice space for circus artists and community groups. Rock Hard Circus is a unique project which provides a paid apprenticeship in circus skills and performing arts for 25 disengaged young people. Due to the project's match funders, such as the Arts Council, the TFN grant released an extra £20,000 which went a considerable way towards the £37,500 needed to start up the project immediately. www.hangaruk.com
- Connect: The aim of this project is to find some of the most excluded members of UK society, people with aphasia (severe difficulties with communication, often caused by a stroke), and engage them in a vibrant self-support network. As part of the 'You are not alone- get connected' campaign, the TFN grant was used for a variety of different vital services, including supporting a project worker with aphasia for 9 months, organising speakers at 12 community events and producing materials to educate people about the poorly understood disability of aphasia. www.ukconnect.org
- Healthprom: This project aims to reduce the levels of maternal and infant mortality in the Balkh Province of Afghanistan, which are the second highest in the world. Their methods are very sustainable and focus on training and education, eventually they wish to establish a maternal health care centre in the province. The TFN grant is being used to build accomodation for trained birthing facilitators in local villages. It will also provide clean birth kits for 120 mothers and pay a project manager to oversee the implementation of the scheme over the first six months. www.healthprom.org
- LocalEyes:
The aim of this project is to use VOICE voting technology to offer an internet-based communications tool to help empower individuals and communities in the UK at a local level, reconnecting them with economic activity, social justice and the environment. The grant from TFN is sufficient to launch pilot projects in six areas interested in running the scheme. This is an important step to being able to roll the scheme out throughout the UK. www.localeyes.org
- Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA): This charity supports and retains Iraq's intellectual capital, a loss of which would take generations to recover, by establishing a network of 'learning hubs'- a university network in exile- in collaboration with local universities and experts in the development and delivery of distance learning materials. The TFN grant is set to fund the first two seminars/workshops held in Syria, in collaboration with universities in Damascus. Paying for staff, facilitators, travel and subsistence. www.academic-refugees.org
- Catch 22 Academy: This charity aims to engage, train and champion young excluded talent in the field of journalism and publishing in the UK. It runs a magazine journalism training academy, a youth focused magazine and a communications agency. The TFN grant has gone towards the purchase of resources required for the smooth running of the academy and to ensure it fulfills its potential, such as dictaphones, camaras and workshop materials. www.catch22mag.com
- The Haller Foundation: The aim of this project is to provide water, farmer training and health education through a small-scale eco-programme for smallholder farmers in Kenya. They aim to develop the use of bio-gas for light and cooking, to enable farmers to release the potential of their existing resources. The TFN grant is funding a monthly three day intensive course for up to 20 farmers on how to resource from landfills and their natural surroundings the tools they would need to create the system. The attendees also receive a starter pack of the more expensive items needed and even some basic health care trainging. www.thehallerfoundation.com
- Airport Watch: This project aims to win wider media understanding and support for more sustainable UK aviation policies. The TFN grant will provide a salary for a part time media co-ordinator for a period of five months. This co-ordinator will develop a media strategy which will be an effective reactive and proactive approach. They would also liase closely with the relevant media and policy people in AW supporting organisations as well as key journalists. This will greatly benefit the organisation as a whole and is an important step in their mission. www.airportwatch.org.uk
- Bikeworks: The aim of this project is to recycle and refurbish used bikes accross London, reducing the number of bikes going to landfill and getting more new cyclists on the road to reduce carbon emissions, whilst creating training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged communities. The TFN grant is going towards staff costs at their Victoria Park training and recycling centre and on overheads and equipment. www.bikeworks.org.uk
